This is a large figurative fly whisk from the Baule tribe of the Ivory Coast. Features gold leaf and a chicken at the top and various other items in relief around its perimeter, like shells for instance, and a grass hopper. Traditional red felt around the bottom, which would have wrapped the horse tail whisk, which has been lost. Would have been carried by a Baule chief as a symbol of office. In good condition, with wear, especially to the gold leaf cover. Doesn’t stand unassisted. Height approx 30cm
