This is a shoowa textile square from the Kuba people of the Congo, Central Africa. A painstaking palm frond woven fabric, using the raffia velvet making process, hand stitched with abstract shapes - a uniquely striking monochrome design in natural yellow ochre shades.   Dyed with natural plant and mineral dyes.  It has been mounted professionally on a stretcher frame.  In good condition with wear and mild discolouration.
