A CROSS RIVER CROCODILE MASK, IJO TRIBE NIGERIA ( No 1833)
A very striking checkered crocodile mask from the Ijo /Ijaw tribe of Nigeria, West Africa. Depicts a crocodile which is the symbol for longevity and perceived wisdom. But it also features human shaped, almond eyes. There are signs of tribal use as an headdress. Would have been worn on top of the head to be animated in dance. A polychrome patina in red white and black. In good collectable condition. We guarantee this item has been tribally used. Length of mask approx 120cm.
